Senior Conservator
The Georgia Archives is the official repository for Georgia's permanently valuable government records and documentary heritage. Established in 1918, the Archives preserves, protects, and provides access to records that document the history, government, and people of Georgia. Its collections include government records, maps, photographs, manuscripts, audiovisual materials, and other historical resources that support research, accountability, education, and public understanding.
The Georgia Archives, located south of Atlanta in Morrow, GA is a unit of the University System of Georgia (USG), which is comprised of 25 higher education institutions as well as the University System Office (USO).
The Senior Conservator is a full-time supervisory position responsible for performing direct conservation treatments on physical collections and overseeing the work, mentoring, and practical training of conservation interns, students, and reformatting technicians and providing training and education opportunities to agencies, students, and the genral public.The position is mostly onsite at the Georgia Archives.
Responsibilities
1. Conservation Treatment: Perform advanced physical treatment, examination, stabilization, and restoration of books,historical documents,andpaper-based records.
2. Supervision & Mentorship:Direct, supervise, and guide the work of staff, interns, and students iworking in the conservation lab and the reformmating lab.
3. Lab Maintenance: Maintain lab equipment, specialized tools,and chemical supplies.
4. Technical Training &Workshops: Develop and deliver technical workshops and hands-on presentations on conservation techniques and practices.
5. Disaster Response Execution: Provide technical conservation support and immediate handling during disaster recovery operations and maintain the GEMA ESF11 designation.
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in Conservation with specialization in book or paper conservation.
Three plus years of experience in the complex treatment of paper-based collections, includingat least 18 months in a special collections library or archives.
Demonstrated experience mentoring, training, and supervising staff.
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Candidates selected for onsite interviews must provide a portfolio and presentation demonstrating complex conservation treatments on a wide range of book and paper materials.
The proposed starting salary is $56,615.98.
